Have you ever had one of those moments where you look at your life and think, Is this really it?
We had one of those moments back in 2010. That moment didn’t just change how we lived—it led us to build the Freedom Driven Life we share today.
But let me backtrack a bit to tell you how we ended up living our unconventional dream—and why we wouldn’t trade it for anything.
(and His Little House on Wheels)
Kyle (the hubs) learned early in his career as a PGA Tour Caddie that living out of a suitcase just wasn’t for him. Flying from city to city, renting cars, and bouncing between hotel rooms felt more like a never-ending episode of Groundhog Day than a fulfilling lifestyle. He needed a better way. So, in 1996, he purchased his first fifth-wheel RV, packed it up, and hit the road.
Suddenly, those nightly “Welcome to Hotel So-and-So” check-ins were replaced with cozy evenings in his very own home on wheels. He could cook his meals, sleep in his own bed, and wake up with a view that was always new. The suitcase? Officially retired.
In 2003, Kyle upgraded to a new fifth-wheel, reaffirming his love for life on the road…
When Kyle and I started dating, I had been settled into my life in Arizona. Kyle, on the other hand, was rolling through a new zip code every week. We quickly racked up some serious frequent flyer miles.
More often than not, I would fly to meet him wherever his work had taken him that week. Occasionally, we’d plan little getaways to fun spots along his route, making our long-distance romance feel like a series of mini-adventures.
But as much as we loved the thrill of meeting in new cities, we couldn’t help but think, what if we stopped squeezing adventure into weekends and just made it our everyday life?
(Nope, not that one – yet…) By 2010, we’d spent more time in Kyle’s RV than in the house we owned in Arizona. It didn’t take a genius to see the math wasn’t mathing. I was already working remotely as a marketing consultant, so geography didn’t tie me down. We were at a crossroads—stick with what was “normal” or design a life on our own terms. After a lot of late-night conversations, we decided to go for it: Let’s live on the road full-time.
Cue the monster to-do list.
The first order of business was to upgrade Kyle’s 2003 RV for something that would work for us both. We wanted something that would feel more like home, not just a temporary living arrangement. After months of research and countless RV tours, we chose an Elite Suites by DRV Luxury Suites. It was love at first sight—well, almost…
We had to be patient as we spent nearly a year working with the manufacturer to custom-build a home (on wheels!) that could support our full-time nomadic lifestyle.
Meanwhile, we tackled the rest of the list: selling our house, downsizing our belongings, and mentally preparing to say goodbye to our “traditional” life. Surprisingly, the hardest part wasn’t letting go of stuff—it was shifting our mindset. But that mindset shift was the key. This wasn’t just about moving into an RV—it was about stepping into a life where we controlled our time, our work, and our adventures.
In the spring of 2012—on Friday the 13th, no less—we officially hit the road in our custom fifth-wheel. And you know what? That supposed unlucky day turned out to be one of the best of our lives.
Since then, our life has been a whirlwind of work, travel, and incredible experiences (complete with plenty of bumps along the way!). Kyle continues to travel weekly for his job, and I’ve mastered the art of running my digital marketing business from wherever we happen to park. Some days, my office has mountain views; other days, it’s a lakeside retreat (and let’s be honest – sometimes the view is simply the RV parked next to us!). The scenery is always changing, and so are we.
It’s not always easy—we’ve had our fair share of hiccups—but we wouldn’t trade this lifestyle for anything. This journey taught us that freedom isn’t just about travel. It’s about designing a life where you call the shots—whether that means working from the road, building a business, or just refusing to settle for “normal.”
So here we are, years later, still living out of our little house on wheels. No two days are the same, and we love it that way. We built our Freedom Driven Life by embracing adventure, flexibility, and possibility. Life on the road may not be for everyone, but for us, it’s been the ultimate road to freedom.
Are you ready to start dreaming about your own unconventional adventure? It doesn’t mean you’re ready to sell your house – it could just be following that dream that keeps nagging at you!
Let us know—we’d love to hear about it!
